Outline
This programme is an invitation funded by the EU ERASMUS International Programme offered to a maximum of 20 students from each of the 3 partner institutions: CPHbusiness Academy (Denmark), Hospitality Business School (Saxion University of Applied Sciences, The Netherlands) and the Faculty of Tourism (University of the Balearic Islands, Spain). At least 2 teachers from each participating university will be present during the entire programme.
The course offers training in:
-
Risk estimations
-
Multi-scenario planning
-
Contingency plans
Methodology
The course aims at training participants to asses risk characteristics depending on the nature of the risk and other situational variables that influence a tourism enterprise’s range of choices.
Lectures will be combined with cross-cultural team work. The course’s multiple-exercise approach framework will be supplemented with field study outings and talks by experienced representatives of the tourism industry.
Students will gain insight into theoretical models and practical applications of handling vital challenges in a rapidly changing environment. Business cases will be studied to build a framework within which theoretical models can be viewed and applied.
Requirements
In order to be eligible, you must have completed at least one year of your service, hospitality or tourism curriculum at your Bachelor Degree prior to course start. Upon course completion, you will receive a diploma worth 6 ECTS credits.
Risk Management
Risk management is the art of estimating threats, determining their consequences, and applying modifying factors in a cost-effective approach to keep adverse after-effects within given bounds.
The ability to prevent catastrophes to further develop by having sufficient back up plans ready to implement will gain suppliers a competitive advantage and be welcomed by customers and governments.
Crisis Management in Tourism is vital in a rapid changing world, where minutes, hours and days count increasingly. Based on events that have affected tourism dramatically in the 21st century:
-
11-September terrorist attacks
-
The Icelandic ash cloud of 2010
-
Overthrowing of North Arab regimes
-
The swine flu pandemic of 2009
-
The Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004
And events that have affected tourism in 2013:
-
Political instability in the Middle East and North Africa
-
Alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria
-
USA’s National Parks on fire
-
Growing sex and drug abuse among young tourists in Spanish sun-and-beach destinations
-
Uncontrolled radioactive water leaks in JapanDevastation after typhoon Haiyan in Tacloban (the Philippines)
It is impossible to foresee, with certainty, all possible disruptions, yet it is unwise to ignore the fact that they can –and will- occur, repeatedly, at short notice, and maybe causing unprecedented damage. A proactive tourism manager needs to develop the ability to identify, assess and tackle risk.
